Is it better to get or to be given?

People who get near me run the risk of getting a hug and a smile.

Recently, I received a hug from someone I haven't seen in a long time. This was a rather pleasant surprise and unexpected. A friend noticed and mentioned that I got a hug from this woman.

I started thinking, as I often do, about the power of words.I received a gift and in return gave a gift. Hugs are shared - maybe that's what I like most about a mutual hug. I won't go into the background of hugs and the various types here. You know when a hug is shared and when it's more forced.

So the questions of the week:
  • Is it better to get a gift - or to be given a gift?
  • How are you at receiving gifts? (Some find giving easier than receiving - and that creates a whole new set of questions and awareness).

YOUR ONE WORD FOR 2015

12/30/2014

Words have POWER.
Choose ONE word to POWER-UP and inspire you for 2015.

Like most people, I've dealt with my share of "challenges". Being fully committed takes courage and compassionate cheerleaders who encourage big thinking and big visions.

Here are a few questions to guide your reflections about 2014/15.
  • What was 2014 like for you?
  • What were some significant events?
  • Who were key people? (Why?)
  • What challenges did you face and deal with? (no judgment on outcomes - how did you DEAL with adversity?)

What will 2015 be like for you?
  • What would you like more of?
  • What would you like less of?
  • What needs to change for you to make this the best year ever?

Year in review and Fresh Starts

12/27/2014

People get so excited about a new year. Letting go of the "passed" year - the one where things didn't go as planned or dreamed about - or hoped for. Or - maybe you are one of those rare few who has a great year - every year.

A fresh start - sure. It's easy. Right.

FRESH STARTS --- 3 questions:

What is your BIG dream for the next week, month or year?
(What would you like to see more of and less of???)

How much strength will it take for you to stand for what you believe in?
(Even if you are the only one?)

How much does Encouragement really matter?

A few years ago, I started an incredible journey of self-discovery. Like others, I've endured hardships. Like most, I've bounced back. Time - after time - after time.

IS THERE ANY COMMON SENSE?

Recently, I got a call from someone asking me to sign a petition.
It sounded like a good cause - help reduce fuel cost and reduce the Ethanol usage.
When I asked about the benefits of keeping ETHANOL use at a bare minimum, here is what I heard:
1. Increasing ETHANOL will increase our fuel costs.
2. More ETHANOL in our fuel will result in more shipping costs and higher consumer prices.
3. Ethanol will damage our engines.
4. Ethanol will damage small engines.
REALLY? That was my response.  REALLY?
In our highly progressed world with "modern" technology, you mean to tell me the the CREATIVE BUSINESS LEADERS cannot figure out how to build engines that might be able to effectively use Ethanol?
REALLY?
I don't know if ETHANOL is harmful to our future.
I do believe that ETHANOL is a RENEWABLE resource. OIL and GASOLINE are not RENEWABLE.
Instead of thinking of a ME economy - where greed drives our need ---
Let's create a WE ECONOMY - where we feed the need - of those who are less fortunate - creating a sustainable future for our children and the generations to follow.

Encouragement Matters.

What would a KINDER world be like?

Today, Mom, the Super Hero, is celebrating her 87th year of living with kindness and respect for herself and others.

As a tribute to her, I'm sharing this short story of deep connections.

Last week, one of Mom's closest friends lost her husband. The funeral was on Saturday.
MOM - THANKS FOR THE PUSH!!!
At first Mom wasn't sure she wanted to go.When she told me who it was, I felt called to take Mom - if she wanted to be there...

My mom is a Super Hero.
Like Wonder Woman.
Sometimes, I wonder about her.
Sometimes, I'm amazed at her Wonder.
Mom is far from perfect. She's the first to admit that...

My amazing Mom.

Many boomers have aging parents like my mom. Certain parts are wearing out. She's still brilliant, an engaging conversationalist, and has deep love for many people, even those she might not agree with.

Mom has done her best raising the family. At times, that was a challenge for all of us. And she has always wanted the best for her children. I believe all Moms - ALL MOMS - and DADS too - do the best they can. That doesn't mean growing up is easy - for the kids or for parents.

Mom leads her life with kindness. Of course it didn't always seem this way to me.
And sometimes, an Encourager challenges Mom...
How are you leading your life?

Have you ever had a huge dream?
Something so large that you are scared to even talk about?
So scary, it's hard to even think about?
And yet ... you feel that taking action would bring big changes to your life...
